Where to NOT Inject Botox: A Guide for Safe and Effective Cosmetic Injections

As medical professionals dive into the realm of aesthetic injections, mastering the art of administering Botox becomes paramount. While understanding where to inject this popular neuromodulator is crucial, knowing where NOT to inject is Botox equally important.

At Medical Aesthetics Education (MAE) in Bellaire, TX, our master injectors want to help you hone your injection skills. That’s why we will provide insights into areas to approach with caution when administering Botox, highlighting the risks of improper injection and emphasizing the significance of precision and technique in achieving optimal results for each and every one of your patients.

Where NOT to Inject Botox

The delicate balance of injecting in popular Botox sites lies in strategic precision and comprehensive knowledge of facial anatomy. Here are the areas where caution should be exercised when injecting Botulinum toxin.

Balance is Key in the Frontalis Muscle

The frontalis muscle, responsible for raising the eyebrows and creating horizontal forehead wrinkles, requires careful consideration. Injecting Botox into this area can treat forehead lines effectively. However, improper injection may lead to eyebrow ptosis or a droopy brow, resulting in an unintended and undesired aesthetic outcome. To mitigate risks, inject Botox in small doses laterally, avoiding the central portion to maintain natural brow elevation.

The Glabella Danger Zone

The glabella, the area between the eyebrows and above the nose, is notorious for its propensity to develop deep frown lines. While Botox effectively smoothens these wrinkles, improper injection techniques can cause complications such as vision impairment, eyelid ptosis, or brow asymmetry. Injecting superficially and using small, precise doses in this region is imperative to avoid adverse effects while achieving optimal results.

Risks of Injecting in the Orbicularis Oculi

The delicate orbicularis oculi muscle encircles the eye and is responsible for various expressions, including squinting and blinking. While Botox can reduce crow's feet and fine lines around the eyes, injecting too close to the eyelid margin poses a risk of drooping eyelids or excessive weakening of the muscle, leading to functional impairment. Administer Botox sparingly and precisely in this area to maintain natural eye function and aesthetics.

Take Caution Around the Nose

Injecting Botox around the nose can effectively diminish bunny lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. However, excessive dosage or improper placement may compromise nasal function and facial expressions, resulting in an unnatural appearance.

The dorsal nasal artery is also intricately connected to the facial arteries and surrounding blood vessels. This means that misplaced cosmetic injections in this region can lead to serious complications, including blindness, alar necrosis, or ocular ischemia.

Exercise caution by injecting Botox superficially and sparingly in this area, preserving both aesthetics and functionality.

Avoid the Infraorbital Region

Located approximately 11 millimeters beneath the infraorbital margin and towards the center, lies the infraorbital region. It is a critical area for Botox injections, typically administered near the side and then directed towards the inner corner of the eye.

However, caution is advised in this region, as deep bolus injections should be avoided. Instead, focus on administering Botox injections in the side regions. Furthermore, it's advisable to employ the fanning injection method within the lower layers of fat in the cheeks for optimal results.

Prevent Swelling and Bruising in the Perioral Area

The perioral area, encompassing the lips and mouth, is prone to fine lines and wrinkles due to repetitive mouth movements. While Botox can effectively address these concerns, improper injection techniques may result in bruising, swelling, or unintended changes in speech and smile dynamics. Inject Botox cautiously in this region, focusing on superficial layers to minimize adverse effects and preserve natural facial expressions.

Take Care When Injecting in Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, are a common concern for many individuals seeking cosmetic enhancement. While Botox can soften these folds, injecting too deeply or inaccurately may lead to smile distortion or an unnatural appearance.

Employ a conservative approach, targeting superficial layers and utilizing smaller doses to achieve subtle yet effective results without compromising facial expression.
