Who Can (and Can’t) Inject in Texas?

Can anyone become a Texas injector? Here’s what you need to know about Texas laws when it comes to administering popular injectables like Botox and fillers.

Non-surgical cosmetic enhancements have boomed in popularity, making treatments like neurotoxins, dermal fillers, and other injectables incredibly sought-after in the United States. Unfortunately, the popularity of these treatments and the lucrative nature of the Med Spa industry has also led to unlicensed and untrained individuals performing injections.

There has historically been a lot of murky water surrounding the question of when, where, and by whom cosmetic injections can take place. MAE going to clear those waters for you today and break down the ins and outs of becoming a legally authorized and trained injector in Texas.

Which Medical Professionals Can Become Texas Injectors?

Texas law states that the only people who can become certified injectors in the Lone Star State are:

  • Doctors (MD)

  • Physician Assistants (PA)

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN)

The previous medical education, certification, and training of these individuals ensure the safety and efficacy of aesthetic treatments in Texas.

Can Non-Physicians Inject?

While the above medical professionals are the only ones that can become certified to inject in the state of Texas, there are exceptions to who can actually perform the injection. A person who is not a physician, like a registered nurse (RN) can legally inject as long as:

  • They are working under the supervision of a certified physician.

  • They have undergone hands-on training in cosmetic injection.

The Texas Medical Board mandates that when patients are receiving aesthetic injections, a screening process is in place, medical record-keeping is performed, and a licensed medical professional is supervising all injections.

When is it Illegal to Inject in Texas?

  • When a certified physician is not supervising the injection

  • When the non-physician injector is untrained

  • When the injection takes place outside of an approved injection facility

Regulations on Cosmetic Injection Facilities

Not only are there restrictions and requirements for the person doing the injecting, but there are also some stipulations that the building itself must adhere to when it comes to Med Spas and businesses that perform injections.

  • A medical office or building in which certified medical professionals are performing injections must be licensed to do so by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation.

  • An independent contractor who is licensed to perform injections can lease a space to perform injections only when the space holds a specialty or cosmetology salon license and the contractor holds a license to rent a booth.

  • A space must comply with certain requirements for establishments that perform cosmetology services and will be subject to inspections.

What are the Licensing Requirements to Inject in Texas?

Let’s look now at those authorized medical professionals that want to become certified injectors in Texas. In order to legally administer treatments like Botox or dermal fillers, you need to be certified to do so. That’s where a reputable and accredited injection training institute becomes crucial.

What Kind of Training is Required for Botox Certification in Texas?

In the state of Texas, an approved and licensed medical professional can receive a certification to administer Botox and other injectables by taking a training course on the treatment. Typically, courses are around 8 hours in total and they must offer instructional, safety, and hands-on training. Medical Aesthetics Education offers Botox hands-on training at our popular Med Spa, LUSH RX located in Bellaire, Texas! For those without necessary certifications, or too far away, MAE offers online training courses which can be completed at your convenience.
